On a Sunny Day: SAYE’s Heartfelt Journey to Empower Adolescents Across Rwanda (2021–2022)
On a warm, sunny day in the hills of Nyagatare, a group of SAYE facilitators stepped into a classroom filled with eager faces and curious eyes. It was more than just another training session,it was the beginning of transformation. Between 2021 and 2022, SAYE Company Ltd. journeyed across 10 districts in Rwanda, reaching 1,047 adolescents with powerful, life-affirming education in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).
In classrooms like GS Akumunigo, GS Kabuga Icyerekezo, GS Nyagatoma, College Rebero, Cyivugiza School, and G.S Kimisagara, our facilitators created safe, open spaces where adolescents could finally ask the questions they’d long held in silence. Laughter, tears, and relief filled the rooms as topics like menstruation, bodily autonomy, reproductive rights, and self-worth came to life through interactive discussions, role plays, and real-life storytelling.
From Nyarugenge to Nyagatare, Kamonyi to Gicumbi, we walked the dusty paths of rural communities and the bustling roads of city neighborhoods to reach the hearts and minds of Rwanda’s youth. We extended our hands even further into Bugesera, Muhanga, and the quiet hills of Rambura Sector in Nyabihu, because we believe every adolescent, regardless of where they live deserves access to accurate, stigma-free SRHR education.
But education alone was never enough. As we listened to girls whisper their worries about managing periods in school or missing classes due to lack of supplies, we acted. Through the generosity of our partners and the dedication of our team, we donated 800 sanitary pads 300 of which were shared during our joyful Period Festival in Gisagara District. There, amid dancing, storytelling, and laughter, we created a space where menstruation was no longer taboo, but a normal part of life to be embraced with pride and knowledge.
To support continuous learning, we also distributed 100 IRIZA comic books , engaging stories that speak the language of young people and turn complex health topics into relatable, empowering narratives.
One of the most special places in this journey has been the Kigali Menstruation Station,a colorful hub tucked in the heart of the city, where adolescents came for learning and left with hope. Here, we welcomed students, teachers, and community members to join open conversations, hands-on sessions, and peer learning that shattered myths and sparked change.
Every handshake, every giggle shared during a break, every hug from a grateful parent—these moments made the long bus rides, the packed days, and the sunburned afternoons all worth it. Because at SAYE, we know change doesn’t come from one-time interventions ,it comes from presence, persistence, and deep, heartfelt connection.
As we reflect on this remarkable chapter, we carry the smiles, voices, and dreams of every adolescent we met. We are not just teaching,we are nurturing confidence, shifting mindsets, and building a generation ready to lead with knowledge and pride.
mission to ensure that every adolescent has access to accurate, stigma-free Sexual and Reproductive Health information and support.
